Students who take a voluntary medical leave for a mental health issue should also be allowed to reenroll in school under the same proviso. The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted the ability for higher education to adopt virtual tools and other teaching modalities that may continue to accommodate students with disabilities. Many colleges and universities, as well the broader U.S. health care system, have long had both direct or implicit biases against BIPOC, women, SGM individuals, and people with many other identities. One approach that institutions have used to address other cross-campus concerns such as diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts; mentoring and teaching; and security concerns on campus has been to establish a campus-wide action commission with representatives from faculty, students, staff, and administrative units.

Despite substantial attention to misuse of alcohol among college students, less is known about drug use on college campuses. These settings encounter the complexity of substance use shaped by diverse factors—social pressures, mental health challenges, academic stressors, and environmental influences—that require comprehensive, multidisciplinary approaches. In this section, we will explore the resources available for students, discuss how to approach a friend in need, and emphasize the importance of promoting a healthy campus culture.
